Here’s a great page at Sitesell that has information about “The Long Tail” theory and book, as well as an audio interview with it’s author.

As far as Marketing is concerned the Long Tail strategy usually means focusing on many, many targeted search terms rather than a few highly contested “main” terms. It’s the strategy of small business: many small niches vs one big niche.
